Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Confirmed

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system caused extensive sudden floods, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million people nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented rising waters climbing to rooftop levels and residences being swept away by strong flows.

Our team rescued fourteen people stranded atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. “A father also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials confirmed at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

According to meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed at least 224 people with dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing were halted recently over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones more intense and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Scientists report that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms cause an average of US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines annually.

The nation’s leader declared a state of emergency on Thursday because of the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
